Unveiling the Mystery of Tar & Chip

Here at R&R Paving, we’ve been serving Nashville and Middle Tennessee with top-notch asphalt paving solutions since 1989. But sometimes, property owners come to us with questions about an alternative – tar & chip. So, what exactly is tar & chip, and is it right for your project?

A Blast from the Past: The History of Tar & Chip

Tar & chip, also known as chip seal or chip surfacing, has a long and storied history. Dating back to the early 1900s, it was a popular choice for paving roads before the widespread use of asphalt. It’s a simpler process – liquid tar (or nowadays, asphalt) is applied to a prepared base, followed by a layer of loose stone chips. These chips are then pressed into the hot tar, creating a textured surface.

The Advantages of Tar & Chip

While asphalt reigns supreme in modern paving, tar & chip still holds its own for specific applications. Here’s why:

  • Cost-Effective: Tar & chip is significantly cheaper to install than asphalt.
  • Durable: When properly maintained, tar & chip can last for many years, especially on low-traffic surfaces like driveways and rural roads.
  • Simple Repairs: Minor cracks or loose chippings are relatively easy and inexpensive to fix.
  • Drainage: The loose stone surface allows water to drain naturally, which can be beneficial in areas with high rainfall.

Is Tar & Chip Right for You?

While tar & chip offers advantages, it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. Here are some things to consider:

  • Traffic Volume: Tar & chip isn’t ideal for high-traffic areas like commercial parking lots. The loose chips can become dislodged under heavy use.
  • Appearance: Tar & chip has a more rustic look than asphalt. If a sleek, modern appearance is important, asphalt might be a better choice.
  • Maintenance: Tar & chip requires more frequent maintenance than asphalt, including resealing and occasional top-dressing with loose chips.
