Asphalt Recycling

At R&R Paving, we’ve been Nashville’s trusted asphalt partner since 1989. But did you know we’re also committed to sustainable practices? That’s right – asphalt can be recycled! In this blog, we’ll explore the world of asphalt recycling – what it is, the process, and why it’s an excellent choice for our environment and your wallet.

What is Asphalt Recycling?

Imagine giving old asphalt a new life! Asphalt recycling involves processing used asphalt pavement into reusable material for new roads, parking lots, and driveways. This crushed and sorted asphalt, called Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP), can be a significant portion of the new asphalt mix.

The History:

The roots of asphalt recycling can be traced back to the 1970s when the oil crisis spurred efforts to conserve resources and reduce dependence on petroleum-based products. Since then, advancements in technology and environmental awareness have propelled asphalt recycling into the mainstream, transforming it from a niche practice into a cornerstone of sustainable paving solutions

The Asphalt Recycling Process

There are two main methods of asphalt recycling: hot and cold.

  • Hot Recycling: This method involves heating the RAP along with virgin asphalt binder and aggregates in a mixing plant. The heat loosens the binder in the RAP, allowing it to effectively bind with the new materials. Hot recycling is a well-established and efficient process.
  • Cold Recycling: Here, the RAP is crushed and mixed with rejuvenating agents (oils or emulsions) that reactivate the old asphalt binder. This method uses less energy than hot recycling but may require specific mix designs.

Why Recycle Asphalt?

Recycling asphalt offers a wealth of benefits:

  • Environmental Benefits: It reduces our reliance on virgin materials and lowers landfill waste.
  • Energy Savings: Recycling uses less energy than producing new asphalt from scratch.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Recycled asphalt can be a more economical option compared to using entirely new materials.
  • Performance: Studies show that properly recycled asphalt pavements can perform just as well as those made with virgin materials.
