Don’t Get Slipped Up: Safety Tips for Asphalt in All Weather

Asphalt is a durable and affordable choice for driveways and parking lots, but its smooth surface can become a slip-and-slide hazard when the weather turns nasty. Here at R&R Paving, we want to make sure your asphalt is safe for everyone to use, rain or shine. Follow these tips to keep your asphalt secure throughout the seasons:

  • Be a Drainage Detective: Proper drainage is key to preventing puddles and slick spots. Make sure the ground slopes away from your driveway or parking lot, and that gutters and drains are clear of debris. Regularly check for clogged drains and clear them to ensure proper water flow.

  • Seal and Coat Like a Pro: Asphalt naturally breaks down over time, and cracks can become filled with water, expanding when it freezes. Regular sealcoating (every 3-5 years) helps protect the asphalt from water damage and keeps it flexible to resist cracking.

  • Mind the Salt, But Not Too Much: Rock salt is a winter wonderland’s worst enemy, but it can also wreak havoc on asphalt. While salt helps melt ice, it can eat away at the asphalt binder, leading to cracks and potholes. Use it sparingly and opt for calcium chloride or magnesium chloride whenever possible – they’re just as effective and asphalt-friendly.

  • Get Grippy with Texture: For new installations or during a re-paving project, consider adding a textured finish to your asphalt. This can be done with a variety of techniques, creating a slightly rough surface that provides better traction in wet or icy conditions.

  • Light Up the Night: Poor visibility is a safety hazard in itself. Make sure your driveway or parking lot has adequate lighting, especially during the darker winter months. Motion-sensor lights are a great option for added security and illumination.

  • Caution: Hot Asphalt! Summer brings its own set of concerns. Asphalt can absorb a lot of heat, becoming scorching to the touch. Warn children and pets to avoid walking barefoot on hot asphalt, and park your car in a shaded area whenever possible.

By following these tips, you can ensure your asphalt surfaces are safe and usable year-round. Remember, a little preventative maintenance goes a long way in keeping your asphalt looking great and preventing costly repairs down the road (pun intended!).
